Our meet

Image
The shining light from a distance village tower; And the long stretch of land ahead, The yellow full moon large and low; And the startled cold wind that hurts Like the arrow from a soldiers bow; As I gain speed with pushing prow It comes back and hits me more. Ahead is a mile of English fields; Two fields to cross until a house appears An oak tree and then a sharp turn to right; And blue spurt of a lighted candle A voice less loud, filled with joy and fear Than the two heart beating each to each.

Burning SUN

Image
Right now it's 3PM. I went out of my room and this poem came to my mind See that golden hue Burning in the west My dreams are with that color My dreams are the sun The sun always sets But never seems to rise That sun carries my dreams Slowly out of my reach I watch it slide away Leaving me behind The color disappears My dreams are with that sun Whenever the sun sets It rises in another place A place blessed by that light My dreams are hidden in that light At my window seat I watch the sun take it all away My dreams are with the sun My dreams are the sun

Because She Would Ask Me Why I Loved Her

Image
If questioning would make us wise No eyes would ever gaze in eyes; If all our tale were told in speech No mouths would wander each to each. Were spirits free from mortal mesh And love not bound in hearts of flesh No aching breasts would yearn to meet And find their ecstasy complete. For who is there that lives and knows The secret powers by which he grows? Were knowledge all, what were our need To thrill and faint and sweetly bleed?. Then seek not, sweet, the "If" and "Why" I love you now until I die. For I must love because I live And life in me is what you give.

Beautiful Dreamer a poem by Stephen Foster

Image
Beautiful dreamer, wake unto me, Starlight and dewdrops are waiting for thee; Sounds of the rude world heard in the day, Lull'd by the moonlight have all pass'd away! Beautiful dreamer, queen of my song, List while I woo thee with soft melody; Gone are the cares of life's busy throng. Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me! Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me! Beautiful dreamer, out on the sea, Mermaids are chaunting the wild lorelie; Over the streamlet vapors are borne, Waiting to fade at the bright coming morn. Beautiful dreamer, beam on my heart, E'en as the morn on the streamlet and sea; Then will all clouds of sorrow depart, Beautiful dreamer, awake unto me!

I can't smile without you

Image
You know I can't smile without you I can't smile without you I can't laugh and I can't sing I'm finding it hard to do anything You see I feel sad when you're sad I feel glad when you're glad If you only knew what I'm going through I just can't smile without you You came along just like a song And brightened my day Who would have believed that you were part of a dream Now it all seems light years away And now you know I can't smile without you I can't smile without you I can't laugh and I can't sing I'm finding it hard to do anything You see I feel sad when you're sad I feel glad when you're glad If you only knew what I'm going through I just can't smile Now some people say happiness takes so very long to find Well, I'm finding it hard leaving your love behind me And you see I can't smile without you I can't smile without you I can't laugh and I can't sing I'm finding it hard to do anything Y...

Silent Trigger

Image
Solar heating of the atmosphere causes landslides is it possible that on a clear, sunny day the seemingly benign weather can be covertly involved in causing a natural disaster? Maybe. Daily, imperceptible changes in atmospheric pressure can trigger landslides. When geologists observed the 3.9 km long landslide called the Slumgullion in Colorado in usa, they found nothing unusual that would trigger it. Earthquakes and heavy rainfall are the classic triggers but they do not occur everyday. The Slumgullion landslide moves at an average annual speed of 0.44 mm per hour. In short, it is a landslide always on the move. “We ruled out factors like temperature or groundwater pressure as their daily level of change was negligible,” said William Schulz. Schulz, who led the study, works for the Landslide Hazard Project of the usgs (United States Geological Survey). They also ruled out earth tides which are imperceptible bulges of the earth’s surface caused by the moon and the sun’s gravitational ...

Subterranean Leak

THE STUDY Centre for Science and Environment’s Pollution Monitoring Lab (PML) tested water and soil samples from in and around the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) factory for the presence of toxic chemicals pml studied the chemistry of the processes used for producing various pesticides in ucil and based on it, selected four groups of chemicals for testing soil and water samples. In chlorinated benzene compounds it tested 1,2 dichlorobenzene, 1,3 dichlorobenzene, 1,4 dichlorobenzene and 1,2,3 trichlorobenzene. In organochlorine pesticides it tested alpha, beta, gamma and delta hexachlorocyclohexane (hch). The two main products of ucil —Carbaryl and Aldicarb—were also tested. Five heavy metals—lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury and arsenic—were also tested. Why we tested ucil used to manufacture three different kinds of pesticides: Carbaryl (trade name Sevin), Aldicarb (trade name Temik), and a formulation of Carbaryl and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (g-hch) sold under the trade name Se...

EcoWatch Priyanka turns Green NDTV Corresponden

Image
After a very successful first year that helped light-up 55 villages with solar power, NDTV and Toyota have announced the launch of Greenathon 2. Greenathon 2 will focus on our everyday activities that harm the environment like the use of plastic and wastage of water. Our campaign ambassador this year is Priyanka Chopra who is urging people to do their bit to save the environment even if it is a tiny step. "This is a fantastic initiative. I'm a part of the young generation who questions almost everything. But we need to understand that it takes little things for something to become big," said Priyanka. "Youngsters often ask - 'What can we do?' But I believe it is only the simple things we can do that can bring about a change. Get involved in such initiatives, spend a weekend doing something good for the environment and you will feel happy... let's make the earth a better place," she added. The first edition of Greenathon, a campaign initiated by The E...

EcoWatch Protecting India's green

Image
The company that had partnered with NDTV in March to create the Greenathon, India's first 24-hour programme on the environment, is still thinking green. Toyota Kirloskar Motors launched a massive tree-planting drive, but with a difference. Six-year-old Varun is working hard on a holiday. So is little Aryan. Tough job after all, to create a forest out of plain land, as Toyota Kirloskar Motors has set out to do, on the outskirts of Bangalore at their campus in Bidadi. Part of a 6,000-plus crowd that planted 30,000 saplings on Sunday, Aryan is thrilled with the results. When asked as to how many trees he planted, Aryan replied excitedly, "Eight!" Mango, neem, banyan, 51 native species were chosen. For that was the advice given by renowned Japanese ecologist Dr Miyawaki to Toyota when the company sought his advice. "Only the real native vegetation has sustained the typhoons, the natural disasters like fire, tsunami etc. If we put exotic species, they grow very fast, but ...

Interceptor does it again

Image
CHENNAI: It was a hat-trick for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In a third successful mission, it proved on Friday that India could shield itself against ballistic missiles from enemy countries by successfully testing an interceptor missile from the Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast. The interceptor shot down a Dhanush missile heading towards the island. The interception took place at an altitude of 80 km over the Bay of Bengal. The Dhanush missile was destroyed in its path in both a direct-hit and detonation of the warhead of the interceptor, which is an advanced Prithvi missile. Dhanush was simulating the trajectory of ballistic missiles with a range of 1,500 km, similar to Pakistan’s Ghauri. The previous successful missions took place on November 27, 2006 and December 6, 2007, when incoming “enemy” ballistic missiles were destroyed in direct-hits at an altitude of 48 km and 15 km respectively. V.K. Saraswat, Programme Director, Air Defence, called the Fri...

Meet India’s silent cyber warriors: DNA

Mumbai, Jan 07: Who are our soldiers in the cyber war with Pakistan? Contrary to popular belief, the cyber war is not fought by hackers hired by the government but by software engineers loosely connected through anonymous chat severs who want to do “something for their country” in their own way and in their free time. Meet Rahul Shekhar (name changed to protect identity), a 26-year-old software engineer with one of the top IT firms in India. Rahul is one of the many “soldiers” India has in its cyber war against known and unknown enemies. A harmless coder of taxation-related software during the day, Shekhar tunes in to the cyber war by night. “I get home and relax for some time. Post an early dinner I spend three hours working on a form of attack, defence or training in India’s cyber wars,” he told DNA. Globally, hackers not connected with the government machinery are known to supply intelligence to their governments. Like snipers on a tall building, computer hackers often act as cyber ...

New year celebrations around the world 2009

Image
New year celebrations around the world Celebrations are taking place around the world to mark the end of 2008 and usher in the new year. From Sydney to New York and Auckland to London, revellers greeted 2009 with pyrotechnic shows and street parties. Some 400,000 people braved freezing temperatures in London for a fireworks display beside the Thames. In New York, meanwhile, thousands packed a frigid Times Square as the famous Waterford crystal ball descended to cheers at midnight. Former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, soon to become the new US secretary of state, helped New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg lower the ball for the midnight countdown. A number of Arab nations - including Egypt, Jordan and Syria - cancelled their planned celebrations in solidarity with Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip after a fifth day of Israeli air-strikes on the coastal enclave. Muted festivities Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, in the Pacific Ocean became the first inhabited place on E...
