Shoes and insults hurled at Bush on Iraq visit George Bush's engagement with Iraq appeared to end as it began - in chaos and anger - yesterday when a surprise trip to Baghdad to thank his troops and herald a new security pact was disrupted by an Iraqi man calling the US president a "dog" in Arabic and throwing his shoes at him. The Bush trip, which will also take in Afghanistan where he arrived this morning, was conducted amid deep secrecy. It was intended to round off on a high note the policy that has most defined his presidency. During a press conference with the Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, he said the conflict had been necessary, adding: "The war is not over." But his comments were clearly not to the liking of one person. "This is the end!" the man shouted, before hurling first one and then his other shoe at the American leader from a distance of about 12 feet. Bush ducked as the first shoe flew close above his head, hitting the wall...

The name Darjeeling is a composition of 'dorje' meaning 'thunderbolt' and 'ling' meaning 'place' ... 'the Land of Thunderbolt'. The Nepalese had marched till the east of Sikkim in 1780 as far as Tista river. Due to a disagreement with Nepal, the British declared war against Nepal at the end of 1813. In 1816 by a treaty signed at Seagoulie, Nepal ceded 4000 sq. miles of territory and by the treaty of Titalya in 1817 the Rajah (king) of Sikkim was reinstated. In 1828 two British officers, Capt. C. A. Lloyd and Mr. J. W. Grant, after settling the internal factions between Nepal and Sikkim, found their way to a place called Chungtong to the west of Darjeeling and were very impressed with what they saw and thought of making this place a sanitarium. Other British officers also reported favourably on the situation of the hill of Darjeeling. The East India Company then directed its officers to start a negotiation with the Rajah...

TO THE CHARNEL GROUND LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: STACY SZYMASZEK: AUGUST 2008 I had to look up the word "Charnel" (spelled "charnal" by the author of the letter). My quick aural interpretation was carnal, carnage, charred - and in fact "charnel" is a repository for or field of bones of the dead. Unlike dramatic metaphors evoked in the love letter genre, the author of this particular letter actually seems to literally be thanking the object of affection for accompanying her/him to "the charnel ground" but follows with a series of disjunctive images that make this 2-line missive unsettling, poetic. It reminded me of Pound's "In a Station of the Metro"! It's not stylistically typical of the letters that follow but I think the connection between love and death (our two big fear factors) serves as a good psychological bass line which often rises up to contort the house and derange the senses. I was really surprised by the presence of ...

It will be a small step for mankind, but a giant leap forward for India . In a boost to national prestige, the country will launch its first unmanned moon mission tomorrow - blasting its Chandrayaan satellite into space from an island off the Bay of Bengal, using a domestically produced rocket system. In doing so, it will match Japan, which in 1990 became the first Asian nation to send a satellite to orbit the moon, signalling the possibility of a race for mineral wealth on the lunar surface. If all goes to plan, India's tricolour flag should be drifting down towards the freezing, airless lunar surface as dawn breaks over the subcontinent on November 11. The 239,000-mile journey is not straightforward - it took the Americans and Russians almost two decades to master it, from the moment space exploration was born. Once above the Earth's atmosphere the launch vehicle's thrusters will have to manoeuvre and fire the Chandrayaan I rocket with precision. If all goes...
